Letter of the week Don’t make a meal of it

Forgotten farmers

IWROTE to COUNTRY LIFE

a year ago, saying that the word ‘meal’ was unacceptable in English society. It is lunch. Or dinner. Tea is not a meal. Charlotte Bathurst, Gloucestershire

MARY LLOYD’S letter of August 10 suggested that the Swindon-based officials of the National Trust were not interested in farming. Dame Helen Ghosh’s reply (August 24) gives a lengthy defence of the Trust’s record on country houses, but farming isn’t mentioned, nor are the questions of its relations with its tenant farmers, nor the growing conflict between farming and wildlife. It seems that Mary Lloyd was right. Peter Knight, Cheshire
