DUR­ING my re­cent re­searches in the Royal Archives at Wind­sor, I came across the fol­low­ing: ‘Ber­ber, Su­dan, Fe­bru­ary 3rd, 1898: Do you know, I should re­ally like some­thing and that is… like Con­tem­po­rary Re­view, The Strand, The Fort­nightly and COUN­TRY LIFE, as they al­ways have ar­ti­cles that one likes to read and the lat­ter is, I think, the best got up pa­per go­ing.’ This was a let­ter sent by Prince Frank of Teck (left), the younger brother of the then Duchess of York (and future Queen Mary, wife of George V) to his sis­ter. Prince Frank was serv­ing in the Su­dan. My book on royal wills (in which the sem­i­nal chap­ter fea­tures the Prince) will, I hope, be ready for the Christ­mas mar­ket. Michael L. Nash, by email
