Hazelnut weevil

(Curculio nucum) a quarter of an inch long

This very odd looking insect, which is the colour of a ripe hazelnut and has a long thin nose with antenna at the end. It lives exclusively on hazel and is responsible for ruining crops, as the female lays an egg into a developing nut and the resulting larvae eat it, exiting through a neat round hole.
