Stand firm on farms

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IN your September 7 number, the National Trust was given what seemed to me a thorough battering in two articles (Town & Country and Agromenes) concerning its purchase of Thorneythwaite Farm in Cumbria. However, I was surprised that neither commentator seemed particularly inclined to also take the owner of the farm to task. To consciously price fellow farmers out of the market is surely the single most effective way of breaking up local farming heritage. A little more solidarity among farmers when it comes to selling on their property would ensure that the fine tradition of upland farming is safeguarded for future generations. A. H. Mason, Northumberland
