Horticultural aide memoire No. 39: Plant daffodils
Daffodils are ready to plant now, long before other spring bulbs. To naturalise them in grass, throw them around and plant them where they land. Use a long-handled bulb planter to extract plugs of turf, insert the bulb, lose a bit of soil and replace the turf cap. The best daffodils for this style of planting are smaller forms such as February Gold or Narcissus pseudonarcissus. On a damp slope, the filmy beauty of N. bulbocodium is a special experience. Your plantations will flourish and spread with the passage of the years, so consider location with care.
