Eat, drink and be sherry

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

T was cheering to read in Harry Eyres’s column (September 28) that sherry might have a renaissance. Three years ago, I was invited to a wedding in Surrey. Before dinner the evening before, I requested a dry sherry. This caused the bar staff great concern. ‘We don’t do sherry in Surrey!’ I heard bar staff discussing the problem. ‘She comes from Devon,’ they agreed. Eventually, a bottle was found at the far end of the cellar and I was served a few centimetres of sherry in a brandy glass, with the waiter having to guess the price.
