Red-post mystery

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IN Dorset, we have red fingerposts dotted around the county. There seems to be no logic as to where they are standing or why they differ from the usual white ones. They’re usually set on a triangle of grass at a junction where two roads meet, yet no one can tell me why they are this colour. Some say they mark the overnight resting place of the dead, being brought for burial at Sherborne Abbey; others suggest they mark the spot where once gallows stood or some terrible accident occurred. Can any reader help unravel this mystery? Judith Spelman, Dorset
