A hag­gard is a fal­con caught in the wild as an adult, often at the end of mi­gra­tion when they were thin and bedrag­gled after a long jour­ney. Hag is still used as a deroga­tory term

A fal­con has a leash or jess to re­strain it. A fal­coner will put the jess strings un­der his thumb or around his fin­ger when car­ry­ing the bird to pre­vent it from fly­ing off
