On Oc­to­ber 15, an orig­i­nal copy of the first edi­tion of COUN­TRY LIFE will be auc­tioned at Ch­effins in Sut­ton, Cam­bridgeshire. The is­sue (left), dated Jan­uary 8, 1897, is adorned with cover ad­ver­tise­ments for Hedges and But­ler, Cad­bury’s, Swaine & Adeney’s ‘New Raw Hide Rid­ing Whip’, Os­mond Cy­cles, ‘Old Grans Spe­cial Toddy: the cream of High­land whiskies’ (at the bar­gain price of 48s per dozen) and the Grand Ho­tel Lon­don. It fea­tures the Earl of Suf­folk and Berk­shire as the mag­a­zine’s first Fron­tispiece and in­cor­po­rates Rac­ing Il­lus­trated.
