NEWS of an announcement last week on the Heathrow/gatwick runway sparked excitement, only for it to be revealed that the decision has been pushed back to 2017–18. Theresa May told the Commons that the subject had been ‘debated, discussed and speculated on for 40 years’. She promised a decision, but stated that there is ‘a formal process’. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan responded by labelling the continuing uncertainty bad for business, accusing the Government of ‘dithering’. Members of Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions (CAGNE) are furious about the continuing threat to Tory heartlands in Sussex, Surrey and Kent. CAGNE Chair Sally Pavey comments: ‘Can we please have a definitive answer… and not allow Gatwick to blight everyone within a 30-mile radius for years to come by suggesting potential expansion in 10 or 20 years’ time?’
