Sporting heaven Hunting with the Bedale, the Spey, a lucky river for me where I’ve fished since childhood— we caught 54 at Rothes this summer— and shooting grouse at Grimwith in October in a fresh, north-easterly wind Favourite kit An old Hardy reel that croaks like a toad and belonged to my grandfather Horse of a lifetime A 17.2hh hunter with a huge Roman nose that I bought to resume hunting on after a six-year break. Tiny was an ugly but wonderful animal that never went lame and jumped whatever I pointed him at— a real gentle giant. In the early days, on the Zetland hunt ride, I sailed over his head, but we clicked soon after. He lived to the age of 28 Red-letter day A bonanza at Fochabers many years ago when the Spey was at a perfect height following a flood. Two of us had four each before breakfast and, by evening, my score was up to nine. I was the youngest member of the party and went down after dinner and caught my 10th—an 18-pounder —which I collapsed on in the dark Last day on Earth It’s hard to choose as I love all three. What I do know is that we’ve got to make the most of all fieldsports for as long as we’re fit enough to enjoy them
