Micro-pig management

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IHEARD someone on the radio this week who breeds micro pigs and was encouraging people to keep them as pets. As a smallholder, I’m becoming increasingly concerned that people are taking on these animals with as much consideration as you would a dog or a cat. At no point was it mentioned that you need to obtain a County Parish Holding number, notify the Animal and Plant Health Agency and obtain a herd number. The pigs need to be tagged or tattooed and a movement licence is required even for visits to the vet or to exercise outside the holding. They shouldn’t be transported in cars nor fed kitchen waste. Listening to some of the owners of these ‘micro pigs’, the above seems unlikely. Indeed, one lady’s pig was so fat it couldn’t walk and had its trotters painted when she had her manicure done—i didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Dawn Miller, South Wales
