His 90th birth­day this year gave the na­tion a won­der­ful ex­cuse to cel­e­brate our most gen­tle, in­tel­li­gent and ex­tra­or­di­nary of broad­cast­ers. Record­ing Zoo Quest in the 1950s, Sir David came across some can­ni­bals hold­ing knives. Ever the gentle­man, he walked to­wards them and said: ‘Good af­ter­noon!’ Thank­fully, like the rest of the world, they fell for his charm.
