Letter of the week Caught on the wrong side
Iwas surprised to notice in Tottering (November 9) that Dicky was walking on the inside of the pavement, leaving Daffy at the mercy of the traffic. As a boy, I was taught that a gentleman walks on the outside of a lady, to protect her from splashes and so forth. In the past, it also kept one’s sword arm free.
I still stick to the rules, although when my lady wife darts across the road to greet a friend, apparently immune to approaching traffic, discretion comes before valour—in the course of self-preservation, you understand. Terry Read, Norfolk
