Letter of the week Caught on the wrong side

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

Iwas surprised to notice in Tottering (November 9) that Dicky was walking on the inside of the pavement, leaving Daffy at the mercy of the traffic. As a boy, I was taught that a gentleman walks on the outside of a lady, to protect her from splashes and so forth. In the past, it also kept one’s sword arm free.

I still stick to the rules, although when my lady wife darts across the road to greet a friend, apparently immune to approaching traffic, discretion comes before valour—in the course of self-preservation, you understand. Terry Read, Norfolk

The writer of the letter of the week will win a bottle of Pol Roger Brut Réserve Champagne
