‘I’ve got a bro­ken chris­ten­ing mug, which I keep on a shelf in my bed­room along with sev­eral of my favourite things. It has my name and a Jan­uary date that’s not my birth­day and I re­mem­ber think­ing when I was lit­tle: “That’s another im­por­tant day in my life.” I know the germ of that—hav­ing a mug that was es­pe­cially mine—made me know that per­son­al­is­ing mugs is re­ally very nice. I’ve man­aged to hang on to it. I’ve no idea how it got its hole in the bot­tom. It’s a lit­tle, dainty china mug and not at all Emma Bridge­wa­ter-look­ing’
