Live and let live
IWAS disappointed to see Nick Portet perpetuating the anti-cyclist hysteria (Letters, November 16). Of course, some cyclists drop litter and, of course, they should not—it’s foul. However, has Mr Portet never seen drivers throwing litter out of their vehicles? Yes, we slow cars down, a dreadful inconvenience. Yes, some cyclists express themselves reasonably directly; has Mr Portet never witnessed such behaviour from a driver? And ‘public urination sadly commonplace’? Come off it— does a cyclist peeing behind a tree cause any angst?
In the New Forest recently, demonstrators threw tacks across a road, knowing that cyclists were approaching. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it. Abroad, there is without doubt a greater spirit of live and let live where two wheels are concerned.
Both sides of this schism in Britain need to try to put themselves in the other’s seat, once in a while. Robert Pawson, by email
