Letter of the week Don’t forget the teacup

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

WHAT a rapid ascendancy up the social ladder the ubiquitous mug has had, from its lowly beginnings to appearing as the subject of a feature article in this magazine (‘A mug’s game’, November 23). Spare a thought for the dainty china teacup and saucer, once the harmonious and elegant teatime favourite, now languishing in charity and junk shops. As for the silver tea service, enough said. Perhaps it’s time for them both to be taken from the back of the cupboard and given a shine? Teatime at 4pm for me would not be the same if I drank out of a mug the size of a tankard—the steaming second cup has much more appeal than quaffing cold dregs. George Vernon, by email
