We may live in a secular age, but the decline in religious faith has only fuelled a hunger for spiritual meaning, which is the subject of a year-long festival at the South Bank, beginning in the new Year. ‘Belief and Beyond Belief’ has, at its centre, a series of concerts by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, presenting works that address ‘being human in the 21st century’. Launched on January 21 with vladimir Jurowski conducting Beethoven’s opera Fidelio, it will continue with, among others, three very different visions of the Creation: Darius Milhaud’s jazzy ballet La Création du Monde on the 28th, Thomas Adès’s piano concerto In Seven Days on February 1 and Haydn’s great oratorio The Creation on the 4th. And there’s much more to come
