Its es­cape from farms, mainly in the South-east and the For­est of Dean, has proved di­vi­sive. The hairy hog has its fans, but does a lot of dam­age to habi­tat, is not the gar­dener’s friend and isn’t averse to mat­ing with do­mes­tic pigs. The pop­u­la­tion is on the rise, prompt­ing fre­quent calls for an of­fi­cial cull. An­other Woburn re­lease, the zan­der— which spreads quickly, es­pe­cially in the Fens, and can weigh up to 20lb—is loved and hated in equal mea­sure, although the ex­tent to which it threat­ens other species isn’t fully known.
