More trouble than they’re worth?
Its escape from farms, mainly in the South-east and the Forest of Dean, has proved divisive. The hairy hog has its fans, but does a lot of damage to habitat, is not the gardener’s friend and isn’t averse to mating with domestic pigs. The population is on the rise, prompting frequent calls for an official cull. Another Woburn release, the zander— which spreads quickly, especially in the Fens, and can weigh up to 20lb—is loved and hated in equal measure, although the extent to which it threatens other species isn’t fully known.
