Steam dream

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

YOUR correspondent invites sounds from the memories of childhood and two from the age of steam come to mind. First, the wonderful chime whistle of a Gresley locomotive about to depart King’s Cross station, followed by the thunderous sound of the driving wheels slipping as the sanders were applied. Second, the sharp staccato sound of a Castle-class engine’s exhaust-beat travelling at speed through Taplow station. Sadly, you have to be approaching the twilight zone to recall such things! Chris Gebbie, East Sussex
