Letter of the week The sound of silence

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IN reply to J. M. Pettigrew of Hertfordshire (Letters, December 28), who asked us which childhood sounds we miss, mine is simple—the sound of silence. We are so bombarded now with noise: muzak everywhere we go, blaring televisions and music playing over actors speaking, which drowns out what they’re saying. There are so many more examples. Whatever happened to quiet time? It’s surprising how much one can hear of the natural world when the extraneous noises are obliterated. Louise Eden, Hertfordshire
