Hull, a city of cul­ture for 2017 and be­yond

ATHENA has a New Year’s res­o­lu­tion to ful­fil. It’s to visit Kingston upon Hull dur­ing its year as the UK City of Cul­ture for 2017. In the Se­cond World War, this was one of the three most heav­ily bombed places in Bri­tain—a strate­gic tar­get in it­self and a con­ve­nient spot for enemy planes to dis­charge ex­cess bombs on their re­turn from raids across the coun­try. Trag­i­cally, the wartime dam­age in­flicted on this medieval port town was sub­se­quently com­pounded by eco­nomic de­cline and sav­agely in­sen­si­tive devel­op­ment. How­ever, make no mis­take, Hull is still a great city with as­ton­ish­ing things to see and en­joy.
