Hull, a city of culture for 2017 and beyond
ATHENA has a New Year’s resolution to fulfil. It’s to visit Kingston upon Hull during its year as the UK City of Culture for 2017. In the Second World War, this was one of the three most heavily bombed places in Britain—a strategic target in itself and a convenient spot for enemy planes to discharge excess bombs on their return from raids across the country. Tragically, the wartime damage inflicted on this medieval port town was subsequently compounded by economic decline and savagely insensitive development. However, make no mistake, Hull is still a great city with astonishing things to see and enjoy.
