ATHENA de­plores the state of the his­toric Bri­tish hy­draulic crane in Venice (Jan­uary 4). Across the Italian penin­sula, at Genoa in the Porto An­tico, there re­mains one 19th-cen­tury hy­draulic crane man­u­fac­tured by Tan­ner & Walker of Leeds. This pho­to­graph shows the crane with an in­for­ma­tion board at its base. The white arms be­hind are part of Renzo Pi­ano’s Bigo. Th­ese hy­draulic cranes were re­placed at about the turn of the cen­tury by elec­tric equip­ment. David Edgar, by email
