Tomasso show

Country Life Every Week - - Art Market -

From January 19 to 28 in New York, Tomasso Brothers of Leeds and London is holding its annual sculpture show at Carlton Hobbs’s gallery, 60, East 93rd Street. On offer are numerous rediscoveries as well as this pair of 131∕3in-diameter terracotta roundels of centaurs and bacchantes (below). The figures were copied from Pompeiian frescoes for Josiah Wedgwood by the sculptor John Bacon and Wedgwood’s white stoneware and black-basalt versions derive from them. They were in the collection of Dr Terry Friedman, former chief keeper at Leeds City Art Gallery.
