We’re dairy cows, not cash cows

Country Life Every Week - - Town & Country -

ALTHOUGH most of us wouldn’t be without free-range eggs, we rarely think about the multitudes of dairy cows that might have just as cramped a life as battery hens. Currently, 300,000 beleaguered British dairy cows spend their lives indoors, but two new brands hope to change the landscape.

Enjoy Milk, which represents 700 dairy farmers (and welcomes further producers), hopes to have bottles on shelves by April with fairer prices at up to 25% higher than those currently paid. The initiative was started by Nick Hiscox of the Free Range Milk Marketing Board (FRMMB), which was founded by his father last year.

Out in the open: freerange herds could mean fairer (but higher) milk prices
