MUCH amusement has been caused in Bowness-on-windermere during the recent hard weather by the lake swans deciding that they could gain an easier living on land. They took to the land, and went, with an ungainly, ‘tanky’ waddle, up the main street each morning to the nearest cafe, where the kind-hearted proprietor answered their appeal with a little nourishment. It was funny to see the swans apparently trying to read the tariff through the window.—louis Herbert
