The best thing since... what?
IN Tottering-by-gently, Annie Tempest raises a very interesting question: ‘What was the best thing before sliced bread?’ (January 18). The first machine to slice bread was invented in America in 1928 by a jeweller, Otto Frederick Rohwedder. Two years later, UK bakeries started producing sliced loaves, so we’d have to go back a long time. Perhaps the invention of electricity was the best thing before sliced bread, but your readers might have other ideas. Verina Pettigrew, Hertfordshire
