This week: mosaic in danger
The future of this 26ft-high mosaic by the Hungarian-born artist Georg Mayer-marton behind the high altar of Holy Rosary Church in Fitton Hill, Lancashire, faces an uncertain future following the proposed closure of the church by the Catholic diocese of Salford. Mayer-marton worked in Vienna until he was forced to flee the city in 1938. From 1952, he took up the post of senior lecturer in the Department of Painting at the College of Art at Liverpool and undertook several church commissions in the area, including this mosaic. He died in 1960.
The photograph shows the mosaic against its original background, with figures of St Mary and St John. These were painted over about 30 years ago, although they still survive.
