Pick of the week
As a slight change, this week’s pick is an oil painting and a return to the Maastricht Fair, to March 19. Martyn Gregory of Bury Street, St James’s is showing an 1856 masterwork by John Linnell, the father-in-law of Samuel Palmer. Mr Gregory is offering the 37¼in by 52in Harvest Sunset on behalf of the owner to whom he sold it 27 years ago. When it appeared at auction in 1868, The Times called it ‘a magnificent chef d’oeuvre of the great artist, the gem of the collection’. Then, it made 1,050 guineas; now, the price is £350,000, which I suspect may be rather less.
