Not so long ago, Handel was known basically as the composer of Messiah, but, since 1978, the London Handel Festival has been dedicated to restoring the reputation his many-sided achievement deserves. This year’s festival, from March 18 to April 24, includes such neglected masterworks as his opera Faramondo and oratorio Joseph and his Brethren, programmes featuring the many illustrious singers the festival has discovered and concerts celebrating Handel in the company of such contemporaries as Bach and Telemann. Venues include the Cadogan and Wigmore Halls and St George’s Hanover Square (01460 54660; www.london-handel-festival.com)
