A stoney silence

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

TO get not one but two of the grandees of the heritage lobby trumpeting support for the highly expensive tunnel option at Stonehenge is (perhaps a sad comment on the age) bound to awaken suspicion (Letters, March 8). I find it all a staggering failure of imagination. Stonehenge has been a sight for the traveller for centuries. Currently, they drive smelly cars, but the monument will see those off as it has seen off Shanks’s pony. The tunnel will be completed just in time for largely silent and odour-free electric vehicles and we will all wonder why we bothered. Matthew Dobbs, London W11
