CHRISTCHURCH PRIORY, Christchurch, Dorset: ‘I passed through the grounds of the priory almost daily for two years and I could never do so without stopping to gawp at its magnificence,’ says best-selling author Bill Bryson, who has selected his 14 favourite churches for Explorechurches (www.explorechurches.org), the UK’S new church-tourism website developed by the National Churches Trust (of which Mr Bryson is vice president).

The list also includes Durham Cathedral, which he calls ‘one of the most moving and iconic creations of Western civilisation’, and an ‘impossibly gorgeous’ chapel in Lambholm on Orkney that was built by Italian prisoners during the Second World War.

The Explorechurches website provides historical and practical information for visitors to 1,300 (and counting) churches across the UK.
