IWONDER if any of your nu­mer­ous read­ers can tell me if they have any ex­pe­ri­ence of witches within the last few years? In my own vil­lage, there lived a woman who bore the rep­u­ta­tion of be­ing a witch. She had a grand­son who was al­ways in trou­ble, but she had the power of warn­ing the lad of any dan­ger by tap­ping her stick upon the ground. Some­times she turned him into a black hare, we were told. She also had the power of re­fus­ing to al­low one who had of­fended her to die and was a very real ter­ror to the vil­lage folk.—t.
