Need to know

Country Life Every Week - - My Favourite Painting -

● Size About four acres including the former Frame Yard where the kitchen garden is now

● Altitude Sea level—the garden itself is only 400 yards from the sea

● Climate The garden’s location at the tail end of the Gulfstream ensures the climate is reasonably mild, with only the occasional late frost to worry about. Rainfall is heavy: at least 50in a year ‘as you can see from all that green’. The Walled Garden itself is very protected

● Soil Generally alkaline rather than acid—the limestone quarry that was the source of stone for the garden walls is directly behind the garden

● Special challenges The challenge has been to renovate the garden completely. The Mcdonnells have collaborated closely with experts over the years. Nigel Marshall, former head gardener at Mount Stewart, Co Down, helped install the first borders, landscape designer Catherine Fitzgerald created a scheme for the upper part of the garden and Reg Maxwell, former curator of the Belfast Botanic Gardens, visits the garden twice a month to advise
