Say cheese

Country Life Every Week - - Town & Country -

Turophiles—cheese enthusiasts—will be descending on the Leicestershire town of Melton Mowbray at the end of the month (April 29–30) for the Artisan cheese Fair (tisancheese, which is exclusively for smaller producers rather than big commercial names. There will be some 300 varieties to taste, showcasing Britain’s growing prominence in the industry— some 160,000 tons exported last year against some 30,000 tons imported— which is rivalling France.

Visitors can sample the nearest cheeses to Melton Mowbray—stilton, colwick, Red Leicester and Rutland Slipcote—those genuinely made in their counties, such as cheddar, Single gloucester, cheshire, caerphilly and Lancashire, as well as those that have strayed into the continental territories of camembert, Brie, Manchego, Savoyard and mozzarella.
