Turophiles—cheese en­thu­si­asts—will be de­scend­ing on the Le­ices­ter­shire town of Mel­ton Mow­bray at the end of the month (April 29–30) for the Ar­ti­san cheese Fair (www.ar­ti­sancheese­fair.co.uk), which is ex­clu­sively for smaller pro­duc­ers rather than big com­mer­cial names. There will be some 300 va­ri­eties to taste, show­cas­ing Bri­tain’s grow­ing promi­nence in the in­dus­try— some 160,000 tons ex­ported last year against some 30,000 tons im­ported— which is ri­valling France.

Vis­i­tors can sam­ple the near­est cheeses to Mel­ton Mow­bray—stil­ton, col­wick, Red Le­ices­ter and Rut­land Slip­cote—those gen­uinely made in their coun­ties, such as ched­dar, Sin­gle glouces­ter, cheshire, caer­philly and Lan­cashire, as well as those that have strayed into the con­ti­nen­tal ter­ri­to­ries of camem­bert, Brie, Manchego, Savo­yard and moz­zarella.
