Our church treasures

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

THE Heritage Lottery Fund’s [HLF] Grants for Places of Worship scheme (Athena, April 12) has been very important in supporting churches, chapels and meeting houses by providing vitally needed funding to ensure these buildings remain in good repair. It is therefore extremely important to maintain at least the existing level of HLF grants and also to ensure that small communities are not disadvantaged. As Athena suggested, our nation’s magnificent churches enjoy a special place in popular consciousness: a recent poll showed that 83% of Britons agree that they’re an important part of the UK’S heritage and that 57% of British adults believe it’s the Government’s responsibility to help to fund repairs.
