MANY tra­di­tional crafts are hang­ing on by a thread, warns the Her­itage Crafts As­so­ci­a­tion, which to­day an­nounces its Rad­cliffe Red List of En­dan­gered Crafts at the House of Lords. With fund­ing from the Rad­cliffe Trust, the study is the first of its kind in the UK and names 17 crafts as be­ing crit­i­cally en­dan­gered, such as clog mak­ing, col­lar mak­ing, fore-edge paint­ing, and swill-bas­ket mak­ing.

‘When any craft is down to the last few mak­ers, it has to be con­sid­ered at risk,’ ex­plains Greta Ber­tram, who led the re­search into 169 dif­fer­ent crafts, each of which has been as­signed to four cat­e­gories:
