Frankenstein Di­rected by James Whale, this re­mains the gold stan­dard of all cin­e­matic adap­ta­tions—and the most in­flu­en­tial. A heav­ily made-up Boris Karloff, com­plete with flat-topped head, neck bolts, stitches and scars, is the mon­ster ev­ery­one recog­nises to­day and is a sta­ple of Halloween cos­tumes (as is the look cre­ated for Elsa Lanch­ester in its se­quel Bride of Frankenstein).
