God­dess of the hunt re­turns

AF­TER a two-year break, the Dianas of the Chase side-sad­dle steeple­chase will re­turn this win­ter, with ad­di­tional classes and an in­ter­na­tional field. Such is the level of in­ter­est that or­gan­iser Philippa Hol­land is to run one race for thor­ough­breds and one for hunters. She has also in­sti­gated a se­ries of qual­i­fiers ‘to keep the stan­dard of rid­ing as high as pos­si­ble’. A num­ber of side-sad­dle ‘dashes’, on the flat, have al­ready been held (Town & Coun­try, Fe­bru­ary 22), with more dates planned for horse shows and hunter tri­als around the coun­try dur­ing the sum­mer and au­tumn. Qual­i­fiers are also be­ing held in Ire­land and the USA.

The 2017 Dianas of the Chase will be run at In­garsby Old Hall, Le­ices­ter­shire, home of rac­ing driver Brian Hen­ton, on Sunday, De­cem­ber 10. The two-mile course will be ‘as big and bold as pos­si­ble,’ says Miss Hol­land, ‘with tim­ber and hedges and about 16–18 jumps.’ A fun race will also be held on the day.
