Beware the bamboo

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IWAS reminded by Leslie Geddes-brown’s comments about bamboo (Spectator, April 19) of seeing in southern Chile dead climbing plants hanging from trees and over undergrowth. I asked my colleagues about it and they said it was a species of bamboo that flowers and dies once every 40 years. This precipitates a plague of mice as the rodents multiply mightily on the benefit of the abundance of seeds—farmers have to take great care in storing their grain for a long time if they wish to keep any.
