Buzzing round the golf course

FUR­THER to your men­tion of the hawthorn fly (Coun­try Mouse, April 26), when a friend of mine was golf­ing in France, the front nine holes were cov­ered with swarms of them, so much so that vis­i­bil­ity was af­fected. Some­what bizarrely, the back of the course was com­pletely clear—i can only think that the flies had paid for just the nine holes. Ni­cholas In­gram, Jer­sey
