THE late Sir Winston Churchill appears on the Frontispiece: ‘When The Queen arrived [at the funeral] with The Duke of Edinburgh and The Prince of Wales, there were indeed few parts of the world that were not represented… Their official religious faiths were even more varied, and many men who came were avowed agnostics… Yet the moment the flag-covered coffin came to rest on the catafalque amid six giant candles, there descended upon that vast cosmopolitan assembly a silence that was more memorable than the booming of artillery salutes. It was a silence that unified. The spirit of Churchill had entered’ (February 4, 1965).
