Deer stalker

Country Life Every Week - - The Country Life Highlights -

This picture taken on the Kildermorie estate in Scotland—so timeless it could be from the Victorian era— was part of our ‘Best of British’ series and reflects the magazine’s consistent support for countryside workers who help to manage the landscape and maintain the balance of Nature within it. Dougie Russell, photographed by Brian Moody, gave up being a steelworker for the outdoor life: ‘I’ve been on the hill with everyone from royalty to people who have won a day’s stalking in a raffle, but the welfare of the deer is paramount— it’s my priority to ensure that we only shoot the old or sick animals and leave the good-quality ones—the enjoyment of the guest always comes second’ (August 12, 2009) KG
