The coun­try house in all its many forms was a source of mo­ti­va­tion and com­fort dur­ing Coun­try Life founder Ed­ward Hud­son’s lonely youth and the high stan­dards he set in pho­tog­ra­phy, writ­ing and, quite simply, taste­ful­ness, led to the mag­a­zine be­ing de­scribed as ‘keeper of the na­tion’s ar­chi­tec­tural con­science’.
