Kevin Lemasney of Locate Jersey reveals why so many global executives decide to relocate to the island

Political stability and a mature, dynamic economy combine with scenic beauty to make Jersey a great place to live for globally mobile executives. Conveniently located just a short flight away from London and a few miles off the French coast, the island is both an ideal location from which to run international business endeavours and a safe, attractive base to raise a family, which is why growing numbers of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIS) are choosing to call it home.

Last year, Locate Jersey, a government team responsible for helping HNWIS and businesses move to the island, received more than 250 enquiries—despite external global pressures—which resulted in 42 High Value Residency and inward investment Business permissions being granted. the signs are that 2017 will be equally successful.

People moving to Jersey come from a variety of backgrounds—from the digital sector to fund management and the natural- resources industry—and places, including London, australia and Hong Kong. among those who chose to settle on the island is James Vernon (above right), formerly the chief operating officer of one of Europe’s biggest hedge funds and now a director of the Jersey business. Having previously lived in the South of France, the Vernons felt they needed to return to an English-speaking education system in time for their children’s exams. ‘a colleague suggested Jersey,’ says Mr Vernon. ‘i’d visited the island many times through my work and we had holidayed there two years earlier and loved it.’

With the support of Locate Jersey and a local estate agent, the family began visiting schools and looking for properties, ultimately buying a historical house used by German soldiers as a headquarters during the island’s occupation. ‘the property as a whole required a great deal of renovation. We were initially concerned as to whether we would find the calibre of architects and specialist building teams required for the project on Jersey, but it turns out that we need never have worried.’

From a business perspective, Mr Vernon found that, alongside benefiting from one of Europe’s most attractive and stable fiscal regimes, Jersey offered him a well-established professional-services infrastructure with funds expertise, a business-focused, independent government and good connections to London and major UK and European hubs.

above all, however, the island allowed him to strike the right work/life balance he needed both for himself and his family. ‘on a personal level, i’ve transformed my level of fitness. i live a relaxed, rural lifestyle and i now jog or cycle to work, along a route that runs next to the sea. it’s a great way to start and end a working day.’ For more information, telephone Locate Jersey on 01534 440604 or visit www. locatejersey.com/ cl517
