The lay of the land

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IS it really necessary for the Ministry of Defence to acquire yet more acres of the British countryside (‘MOD makes Cumbrian “land-grab” attempt’, May 24)? It remains one of the largest single landowners across the UK and doubtless not every acre it already owns is put to best use. Since the end of the Cold War and the transition to a war on terrorism, which presents a domestic threat quite different to the age of mass state-to-state warfare, it is also surely the case that a fit-for-purpose Defence ministry needs less land, not more. Cumbria County Council should not fear the resolution of Whitehall and should reject this misguided use of public funds. Roger Lewis, London
