Surprised to see a familiar face

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IBOUGHT a copy of your anniversary edition (May 31) and was surprised and delighted to discover a photograph of my grandfather, Capt C. E. Radclyffe, displaying his tattoo of the entire family coat of arms on his chest (below). I have been searching for many years for a copy of this picture.

It was last printed in a New York newspaper in 1904, in an obituary that claimed he had died in the Boer War. He kept a copy of this in his diary, writing that it’s not given to many to read their own obituary!

I did know that grandfather was a frequent correspondent with COUNTRY LIFE, but I had no idea that these photographs had appeared. I would be grateful if you could supply a copy so that we can hang it next to the more serious portrait (right) of the founder of our company, Foxdenton Estate. Nicholas Radclyffe, by email
