From a pit to a piece of art

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IVERY much enjoyed Julie Harding’s article ‘No longer a blot on the landscape’ (June 28) and had to let you know about a fascinating sculpture near my birthplace in South Wales. Caerphilly County Borough is the proud home of Sultan the Pit Pony (above), a 650ft-long sculpture designed by Mick Petts. Sultan pays homage to the pit ponies of the South Wales Coalfield and resides above the site of the Penallta Colliery—members of my family and extended family were once employed at a pit across the valley.
