IN your fas­ci­nat­ing ar­ti­cle ‘Last man stand­ing’ (July 5), de­scrib­ing the ca­reer of Squadron Leader Ge­orge ‘Johnny’ John­son (right), the last sur­viv­ing Bri­tish Dam­buster, it men­tions that he was awarded an MBE in this year’s Queen’s birth­day honours list. Is an MBE re­ally the best we can do for such an amaz­ing war hero?

I note, with irony, that ex­tant vet­er­ans of the Bri­tish Armed Forces who par­tic­i­pated in D-day are ad­mit­ted, by the French Gov­ern­ment, to the rank of Che­va­lier of the Lé­gion d’hon­neur. Dr David A. Woolf, Cardiff
