Round-mouthed snail

Country Life Every Week - - My Favourite Painting Magnus Linklater -

(Pomatias elegans) This is a quirky species with many differences from its more abundant cousins. Although the majority of snails crawl with a wave-like motion using the entire foot, the round-mouth appears to put one foot in front of the other, explaining its old name of ‘shuffler snail’. The round-mouth differs from many snails in that it has two sexes, male and female. The round-mouth can’t cope with intensive farming, so has declined widely within its range in both Europe and the UK
